Ben Feeds Back
WHO, WHAT, WHY, WHERE …
Hi, I’m Ben. I’m 13 years old and live in Scottsdale, Arizona.
The two things I like the most are sports and food. I love to cook and I love eating at nice restaurants. It makes me feel happy to be waited on and blessed that my family can afford to eat high quality food and dine at great places. But a number of people and families don’t get to go out for nice meals or even crappy meals for that matter.
There are more than 100,000 homeless families that include over 1,000,000 people in the United States on any given day.
These families, which are more than 60% children, don’t have a place to live, a bed to sleep on, a closet to hang clothes in, a fridge to open when they are hungry, a table to eat dinner at, and never get to go out for dinner and especially not a steak or a nice piece of fish.
Can you imagine?
It is hard for me to think about it. They must be so sad and so scared.
As I was preparing for my Bar Mitzvah, I had to think about what I wanted to do and who I wanted to help for my Mitzvah Project. A Mitzvah is a commandment or good deed performed in the Jewish tradition as an expression of one’s active role as a caring and righteous person. I decided I wanted to help homeless families.
I want to make those families feel that people care for them and give them some dignity, even if only for one day…
For my Bar Mitzvah project, I took a homeless shelter and turned it into a ‘five star’ restaurant for one night. I had a master Chef, Eddie Matney plus other volunteer chefs, that helped me with all the cooking, several food purveyors that donated all the food – and not just any food, but fancy food! Gourmet things I like to eat when I am at a nice restaurant. No burgers and fries here….
I also had several people that had volunteered to be the wait staff and turn the place into an actual restaurant. There were nice table cloths and flowers on the tables and even had live music to play for them. Everything to make it extra special!
The big event happened on September 30th 2014 at one of the many shelters UMOM has throughout the valley. UMOM is an outstanding organization that helps more homeless families in Arizona than any other organization.
UMOM keeps families together, gives emergency shelter, helps them transition to housing, trains the people with skills and education and provides medical and child care so they can get their lives back on track.
The looks on the faces of 200 homeless moms, dads and kids when they walked in and saw the dining room turned into a unforgettable restaurant, was amazing. They were so happy! They felt cared about and inspired and especially loved.
Please help me and support my project. My goal is to raise $25,000 for them in addition to the special dinner. Even though the dinner has passed, it is not too late to donate.
Please make a donation. All donations are tax deductible and if you live in Arizona you can get a state tax credit as well.
